The play “Antigone” created by Sophicles, develops a dramatic play that is involves with families conflict showing the governance setting the play takes place, this play gives us furthermore insight on topics that come into consideration such as authority (social authority), dictatorship, divine power, loyalty, duty, and wisdom. In the play each one of the characters such as Ismene, Haemon, and Teiresias all play a role that is very distinct from one another yet somewhat interconnected to the plot of the play, as there values, and actions help shape the development of the play even though the main characters of the play are Antigone, and specially King Creon. All of these character do show how valuable they are to plot of the story.

In the beginning of the play Ismene does show her duty to her sister Antigone by advising her of the threats her actions may have caused (ismene, 95). Throughout the play Ismene actions show her obedience to authority but also to the social norms of the city, for example “I do indeed beg those beneath the earth to give me their forgiveness, since force constrains me, that I shall yield in this to the authorities. Extravagant actions is not sensible” (Ismene, 74-78). In the previous example we see Ismene understand that what has been forbidden should be followed as she saod actions are not  sensible which can end in her having to pay for her actions. Ismene also shows her duty to her family as she does wants to pay her respect to her dead brother yet shes trying to follow creon orders to avoid any instability between her and creon, (Ismene, 90-92). Even though in the beginning of the play she shows her obedience, cautious and duty to family as when Antigone was discover of breaking Creon rule she stood with respect to her sister Antigone and she was willing to pay for the crime her sister had commited, (Ismene, 589-590).

Sophicles Introduces Haemon as the son of Creon but also a lover to Antigone which gives Haemon a decision to make between Creon to yield to his father or show his loyalty to his lover Antigone. Haemon shows his Obedience and loyalty to his father as he wants to follow his father and cherishes his father's work as a king, but he encounters that his father's actions may have caused him to rebel against him. For example Haemon said “Father, I am yours; with your excellent judgment you lay right before me, and I shall follow it. No marriage will ever be so valued by me as to override the goodness of your leadership”, (Haemon, 685-688). This shows that haemon is obedient to his father, and how loyal he is to him. In the play Haemon  also shows his intelligence by his ideology upon his father actions even though he is young yet he tries to reason to his father that having to punish Antigone by death could impact his city. As an example “ the city mourns for this girl; they think she is dying most wrongly and most underservedly of all womenkind, for the most glorious acts.” ( Haemon, 743-746), we get to understand that Haemon wants his father to succeed as a king and his actions can hurt him rather than show he is a leader. In the end of the play we learn that haemon love was so much stronger towards her bride Antigone than his loyalty to his father laws, to demonstrate “He drew his double-hilted sword. As his father ran to escape him, Haemon failed to strike him, and the poor wretch in anger at himself lean on his sword”, (Messenger, 1299-1302), here we see how Haemon was willing to rebel on his own father for punishing Antigone.

The character Teiresias in the play “Antigone”, by Sophicles is described as a blind man that gives wisdom to the king Creon for his own sake but also represent devine justice for the people of Thebes. As proof “ And so you have steered well the ship of state. I have benefited and can testify to that. Then realize you are on the razor edge of danger”, (Teiresias, 1040-1043). In this excerpt Teiresias is trying to tell Creon that maybe he has not been listening to his advice or wisdom as the actions that he has been taking can lead to danger on his city. Another examaple Teiresias tries to give wisdom to Creon is “a man is no longer stupid nor accursed who, having fallen on ill, tries to cure that ill,not taking a fine undeviating stand. It is obstinacy that convicts of folly.”, (Teiresias, 1074-1077). On the previous example Teiresias is trying to tell Creon to accept his mistake and to not continue to justify as it can be foolish. Teiresias continues to tell Creon that dishonoring the dead does nothing then making Creon less of a person than he is as the dead is gone and what more death would he be giving him, (Teiresias, 1078-1080). Teiresias also talks to Creon about his own actions and how he has rebel upon the gods rules, to illustrate “gods you have kept on this earth without due share of rites of burial, of due funeral offerings, acorpse unhallowed. With all of this you, Creon, have nothing to do, nor have the gods above. These acts of yours are violence, on your part.” (Teiresias, 1129-1134). Both Teiresias and Haemon look out for their king, they reason with him, and they both challenge Creon of his authority which helps develop the plot of the story, even though Teiresias tells him of the consequence he may face Heamon teaches Creon the value of love. Additionally Teiresias has similar characteristics to the wizard Mirlen. The wizard Mirlen is a character that has wisdom, guides the king, and a councils as he’s able to the secrets of magic. This character can be compared to Teiresias as both serve to the king for advisement, they both try to guide the king for good and their city, but they speak with truth.

Overall, this essay demonstrate the different roles that each one of the characters play like Ismene ,Haemon, and Teiresias play in the play “Antigone” by Sophocles. All of these characters play a valuable role in the play as they also help develop the whole plot of the play. As it was rescribe before Ismene represents obidicen to authority and duty to her family, We also get to know that Haemon is so intelligent as he tries to reason with Creon to justify for justice but also trying to be loyal to his father, finally Teiresias the wisdom that he has for the kings is very valuable yet misunderstood.
